How to Play Minesweeper
Minesweeper is a classic logic puzzle. The board hides a set number of mines. Your goal is to uncover every safe square without detonating a single mine. Your first click is always safe and opens up an area of the board.
- Dig: tap or left-click a hidden square to reveal it.
- Read the numbers: each number tells you how many mines touch that square, including diagonals.
- Flag mines: long-press (mobile), right-click (desktop), or switch on Flag Mode to mark a square you know is a mine.
- Chord: tap a number whose mines are all flagged to open all of its other neighbours at once.
Difficulty Levels
- Beginner: 9×9 board with 10 mines — perfect for learning the patterns.
- Intermediate: 16×16 board with 40 mines.
- Expert: 30×16 board with 99 mines, the classic competitive setup.
Minesweeper Strategy Tips
Start with the obvious
A “1” touching exactly one hidden square means that square is a mine. Flag it, then look for numbers that are now fully satisfied — all their other neighbours are safe.
Learn the 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 patterns
Along a straight edge, a 1-2-1 pattern means mines sit under both 1s; a 1-2-2-1 pattern means mines sit under the two 2s. Spotting these saves a lot of time on Intermediate and Expert.
Guess smart when you must
Sometimes the board forces a 50/50. When that happens, guess early rather than late, and prefer squares near the edges of open areas, where a lucky reveal gives you the most new information.
Use chording for speed
Fast players rarely click hidden squares one by one. Flag mines, then chord on numbers to open several squares in a single tap and beat your best time.
