Batak

The Turkish trick-taking classic for four. Bid in the auction, name trumps and take the tricks you promised, or make the bidder go down. Play alone or with a partner against computer players on three levels, or online with friends and players from all over.

How to play Batak

  1. Four players get 13 cards each. Play goes around the table to the right, and the player after the dealer opens the auction.
  2. In the auction, bid how many of the 13 tricks you think you can take, or pass. The lowest bid is 5 when you play alone and 7 with a partner. A pass is final, and the highest bid wins the auction.
  3. The winner of the auction names the trump suit and leads the first card. Trumps cannot be led until someone has played a trump, unless you hold nothing else.
  4. Always follow the suit that was led, and play a higher card than the best one on the table when you can. If you have no card of that suit you must play a trump, and beat the highest trump already played when you can. With neither, play any card.
  5. The highest card of the led suit takes the trick, unless a trump was played: then the highest trump wins. The winner of a trick leads the next one.
  6. After 13 tricks the hand is scored. If the bidder took at least the bid, they score the tricks they took; if not, they lose the bid. Everyone else scores their tricks, but a player with no trick at all also loses the bid. The match ends when someone reaches the target score.

Tips and strategy

  • Count your sure tricks before you bid: aces, kings with company and a long trump suit. A short side suit lets you trump early.
  • Name the suit you hold the most cards in as trumps, especially when it has the ace or king.
  • As the bidder, lead trumps early to pull the other players' trumps, then cash your high cards in the side suits.
  • As a defender, keep your aces for the bidder's strong suits and try to take at least one trick, or you go down too.
  • Watch which high cards have been played. A king becomes a sure winner once the ace is gone.
  • With a partner, count on about three tricks from them when you bid, and do not waste a high card when your partner already wins the trick at the end.

Batak FAQ

Is this the real Turkish auction Batak (Ihaleli Batak)?

Yes. You bid for the contract, the winner names trumps, you must follow suit, beat the trick when you can and trump or over-trump when you are out of the suit. A failed contract loses the bid.

Can I play Batak with a partner or with friends?

Yes. Choose Partners to play in two teams of two, where partners sit across from each other and share their tricks. With Play with friends you can open a table with a code, and computer players fill the empty seats.

Is Batak free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser on Popyca, with nothing to download or install and no account needed.

Can I play Batak on my phone?
