With only nine cells, 3x3 2048 is a quick and unforgiving puzzle. The 2048 tile itself cannot be reached on a board this small, so the goal here is the 256 tile, and every swipe has to count.
Swipe, or press the arrow keys or WASD, to slide every tile. Two tiles with the same number merge when they meet.
After each move a new 2 or sometimes a 4 appears in an empty cell. When the board is full and nothing can merge, the game ends.
Reach the 256 tile to win. You start with two undos.
Milestone tiles (32, 64, 128 and 256) each earn a bonus undo, up to a maximum of four.
Tips and strategy
The corner strategy still works: keep your biggest tile in one corner and use mostly two directions.
With three cells per row, one stray small tile can block an entire merge, so never leave a lone 2 or 4 sandwiched between bigger tiles.
Save your undos for real mistakes. On a board this small, milestone tiles are the only way to earn more.
Stars are awarded for reaching the 64, 128 and 256 tiles. If it feels cramped, try 5x5.
2048 3x3 FAQ
Can you reach 2048 on a 3x3 board?
No. A 3x3 grid does not have enough cells to build a 2048 tile, so Popyca's 3x3 mode ends at 256. For the full 2048 play the classic 4x4 board, or the roomier 5x5 and 6x6 boards.
Is 3x3 harder than the classic 4x4 board?
It is a different kind of hard. Each game is short, but there is almost no room to recover from a bad move, which is why the mode gives you two undos to start.
